I found this acronym and content for this blog from Dr. Furhman’s website. According to him these foods should be included in our diet. I am happy that I eat most of it, though need to eat them be regularly. If some of these foods are not available in India then find the nearest substitute. My dad suggests that there is no need to go to an expensive store to buy berries :)
Dietary habits and sedentary lifestyle have not only increased diabetes but also increased the number of cancer cases. With proper diet of leafy vegetables and nuts etc we can prevent them and promote health and longevity.
What should we, as teenagers, do now to create a strong foundation for our life ahead. Also, may be influence the way our parents eat, yes! we can also influence. I have done that. (another story for some other day).
Here is the meaning of this acronym:
G-Greens
Leafy greens are also the most nutrient dense of all foods, but, unfortunately are only consumed in minuscule amounts in a typical Indian and North American diet. All vegetables contain protective micronutrients and phytochemical, but cruciferous vegetables are the best. They should be part of daily diet in the form of raw salads or smoothies. These vegetables are Arugula, Indian Saag, Spinach, Brocoli, Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Turnip etc. Recently, we made noodles out of raw turnip
These cruciferous vegetables with unique chemical composition has potent anti-cancer effects.
B- Beans
Eating beans, peas or lentils at least twice a week has been found to decrease colon cancer risk. I think Indians are good here as lentils-Dal is an everyday food.
O– Onions
Onions, along with leeks, garlic etc. has beneficial effects on the cardiovascular and immune systems as well as diabetes and cancer. The effect is as powerful as cruciferous vegetables
M – Mushrooms
Consuming mushrooms regularly is associated with decreased risk of cancers. I don’t know whether India gets good mushrooms or not. No harm in adding mushrooms to diet, they are very tasty and I get them on pizza, pasta, indian subzi etc.
B – Berries
Blueberries, strawberries, and blackberries are true super foods. I regularly drink smoothies of berry on days when I get bored of smoothies from cruciferous vegetables. You can get frozen berries too.
S- Seeds
Seeds and nuts contain healthy fats and are rich in a spectrum of micronutrients, including phytosterols, minerals, and antioxidants. Many seeds and nuts have anti-cancer effects
All the best!
