The Battle of Gulab Jamun vs. Brownie

I moved to Canada when I was four, so I had come to this country after eating and experiencing many different Indian sweets. After a couple years, I started growing accustomed and started to enjoy brownies and cupcakes over all of the Indian sweets, like Gulab Jamun, that my parents fed me. My parents told stories of how they used to enjoy eating these sweets and how much I am missing out on, but I just

did not agree. They also claimed that I needed to keep my “culture” with me, but this “culture” was not doing anything but making me unhealthier. I told them that culture could be maintained in a different, healthier way. It took many years of discussions with my parents until they finally understood. After this, I was able to go to parties and eat just the food I liked, brownies, instead of doubling my calorie intake by also eating the sweets my parents gave me. I saved many calories by doing this and I do not regret it at all. I have not only made myself, but also my parents healthier by cutting the flow of brownies and Gulab Jamun’s coming into our home by a lot more than half. Before I had done this, my father would go crazy every time we went to an Indian party by filling his plate up with cake, brownies, ice cream, Gulab Jamun, Jalebi and more! He was able to significantly reduce the amount of sweets he ate.

I notice many of my Indian friends and cousins eating both of brownies, cakes and also Indian sweets constantly, just like my dad, and I think it is very important that they try to decrease the amount they eat or choices they have. This could by done by picking one and never eating the other one (just like I did) or, cutting down the amount of pastries and sweets you eat, each by half, to decrease the amount you consume overall (just like my father did).

I am also adding my Ted Talk about the dangers of sugar again, just to remind everyone, including myself. Although the best choice is to avoid these sugary sweets at all times, I understand that it is very difficult. The second best thing to do is pick a side on this battle between brownies and Gulab Jamun? Or just stay netural and decrease your intake on both.
