“A single 12 ounce glass of O.J. contains an incredible 9 teaspoons of sugar, about the same as a 12 ounce can of Coke! This equates to 36 grams of carbs, about half of what you should consume in a day. Let’s do a little math. If a person were to drink just one glass of orange juice each day, that would mean that he or she would be consuming an extra 3,285 teaspoons (close to 70 cups) of sugar in a year or about 53,000 extra calories.”

These fruit juices are as just as bad as any other soda like Coke or Pepsi. I remember seeing a poster at my school in fifth grade stating that water is the best drink to have and that processed fruit juice is one of the worst. However, I still see these juices in many people’s lunch boxes. I always wondered why so many people drink it almost everyday, but now I have realized it is because they do not know how it is harming their bodies.
Did you really know that the orange juice you buy at grocery stores are a waste of money! 98% of the orange juice in North America is pasteurized or flash pasteurized. Pasteurization is the process of heating a liquid at an extremely high temperature for a few seconds and destroying the nutrients that were in the juice, leaving you with sugary water.
According to expert and author of the book Squeezed, Alissa Hamilton states that orange juice is stripped of oxygen and flavour. It is stored for up to a year in tanks and re-flavored before it is packaged and sold to consumers. If we were to taste the juice coming out of these tanks, it would taste like pure sugar water, not orange juice. I don’t know about you, but I think that this practice sounds absolutely disgusting.
Wow!- found this gem today,
Juice companies hire fragrance and flavour companies, the same ones who may be supplying scent to your favourite perfume brand, to ensure that flavour and the fruit smell is added back to the juice to create a fresh taste. Flavour packs aren’t listed as an ingredient on the label because they are technically they are derived from orange essence and oil. How shocking!
In the next few weeks, I will share the best way to juice, its certainly not a store bought juice. Please go to your refrigerators today and check the amount of sugar waiting for you to consume just inside your juice boxes. Its better to completely empty your refrigerators from these.
