Why do parents bring unhealthy food at home?

Have you ever thought why parents continue feeding unhealthy food to their children and help them build unhealthy eating habits? I believe that it is due to lack of awareness and also laziness. This lack of knowledge is not only about nutrition but also the consequences their children will face because of the food they eat throughout their life.

Teens can also influence their parents. My experience of changing the eating habits of my parents was much needed when we moved to the U.S. My family went through this busy phase of new jobs, new school, and new city; it forced us live on restaurant food daily for almost six months. Our eating habits did not change until I put my foot down and claimed I wouldn't eat another meal from a restaurant. My parents then found ways to balance our diets with this busy lifestyle. Soon, we re-started eating salads, raw vegetables, lentils and home cooked meals. I pushed them to eat healthy again even though it meant sacrificing taste (in the beginning). Soon, the taste of vegetables once again started to become more enjoyable.

Every parent wishes a good, long healthy life for their kids. However, by not maintaining a healthy diet throughout their childhood they do not create strong nutritional habits that will help them throughout life. Instead, they are setting their kids up for an adulthood filled with medications and diseases. Always remember what we eat as children is going to influence our future health.

In my opinion, parents are a lot more influential on their child’s health than the media that surrounds them. Parents can control the kitchen in their home by freeing it of junk and filling it up with nutritious foods. Sometimes, if they fail in providing us healthy foods, we as teens are responsible for making sure they remember to give us the foods we need to live our best life.
